Marine Lab and Coral Restoration
Vabbinfaru opened the first marine lab funded and built on a private resort in the Maldives, in 2004, and its conservation work is the property's real signature. Guests join marine biologists for hands-on coral restoration using micro-fragmentation and mid-water rope nurseries suspended four to five metres below the surface, and can take part in reef clean-ups removing crown-of-thorns starfish and plastics. The island also pioneered an electric reef structure in 2001 that uses a low-voltage current to accelerate coral growth.
