The gently sloping roof of The Retreat is the island's defining structure and its power station: 984 solar panels spread over 1,643 sqm, producing 575 MWh a year and a peak output of 320 kWp - enough for fifty guests and a hundred staff. Designed by architect Yuji Yamazaki, it also filters the equatorial light into a dappled glow over the whole building beneath it.
